In the beginning, Amélie Bouffard was simply looking for more teaching resources, more information and ideas to improve her teaching skills. If everyone in the program pooled their resources and shared them, they would have lots to go around. After much discussion and work with her peers came the Bishop’s University Language Teaching Club, an ambitious new project courtesy of the nascent Teaching English as a Second Language department.

By bringing together amateur tutors and motivated learners, people can practice and improve their educational abilities while offering a free service to others. To get the ball rolling, the LTC began working with the Bishop’s English Acculturation Program, a club offering series of workshops to Chinese exchange students, revolving around the teaching of English. TESL Professor Sunny Lau had been supporting all twenty of the members since its inception, so being able to get more tutors for her students alleviated the burden, as well as gave the LTC a chance to launch its tutoring program.

Bouffard stresses however that the club is not Anglo-centric: “One of our core values in the club is that we’re not privileging any language above another – English is the language of communication but then within the club each language has the same value.” In fact, there are currently as many people learning French as there are learning English, and demand is growing: People have also requested tutoring for German, Spanish, Dutch, Arabic and American Sign Language.

Of course, club activities are not limited to tutoring. By working in tandem with BEAP’s Diana Gagné and the Culture Kitchen Club, the group recently organized a Chinese New Year celebration. Normally, BEAP activities are centered on typical Canadian holidays, teaching specific vocabulary and using it within a setting. This time, it allowed for a bit of role reversal, allowing the Chinese exchange students to teach something to others.

Furthermore, many of these same students have, in turn, become mandarin tutors. As tutoring coordinator Anne-Lena Ouellet states, “Anyone who wants to learn and practice how to teach is right with us!” Admittedly, these instructors are not experts, but are provided with a workshop to get started and support from students in the TESL program. She continues: “No one is born a teacher: you can make some mistakes [here], but it’s OK!”

As for future goals, the founders would like to see more involvement from first and second-year students in the Education department so that the club can continue; they will soon be starting their internships and won’t be able to support the club full time. On top of that, they would like to see it expand to the whole of Bishop’s, the local community and even cooperation with the University of Sherbrooke. “We all have to start somewhere,” states Ms. Ouellet.
