Reflections from the youngest MP in history

Walking into the office of Pierre-Luc Dusseault, newly minted MP for the riding of Sherbrooke, Quebec, one immediately spots adorning the room an orange NDP baseball cap, a magazine cover of former NDP leader Jack Layton, a Layton bobble-head doll, and the traditional fridge magnets displaying Dusseault’s 20 year-old face.

Dusseault followed politics from around the age of 13 in his hometown of Granby, Quebec. Though his parents were never very interested in politics, Dusseault’s interest in politics deepened in his teenage years. At the age of 17, Dusseault officially became involved with the NDP. From there, Dusseault quickly became the president of the NDP riding association for Sherbrooke, and formed the NDP party club at L’Universite de Sherbrooke. There, Dusseault was working on a degree in Political Studies prior to his election victory.

This last election, there was a rush that came to the campaign process for the NDP candidate. “I tried to find a great personality in the community to run,” Dusseault recalls, “and I couldn’t, so I ran. It all happened so fast, we didn’t’ know when the election would be called.”

The election results came as a surprise to most of Canada, though Dusseault reflects the time in his campaign where it seemed like the wave had hit home. “It was mid-campaign, and we were meeting people two weeks before as well, and we thought it was happening,” remembers Dusseault, “I was in the Jacques Cartier Park on the walkway, and a lot of people were already saying they voted for me [in advance voting].”

Dusseault beat out Bloc Quebecois incumbent and MP for the riding of nearly 13 years, Serge Cardin. As the “orange wave” of NDP support swept through Quebec during the election, the majority of Bloc stronghold ridings, leaving a whole stream of new NDP MP’s entering the House of Commons.

While many voters woke up to find a decimated Bloc, Dusseault began to meet his constituents. He reflects that many of them were happy to see a new face. “I think people vote for change, and it is a big change,” says Dusseault.

The young Dusseault is careful in sharing his reflection on Cardin: he was involved and people liked him, and Cardin’s election defeat was “not against him, it was for change: it was for something different.” Dusseault recalls that in Cardin’s win of 1998, the Bloc MP only won by 500 votes. Dusseault also questions the idea of Sherbrooke as a traditional Bloc stronghold, noting that the provincial government’s Parti Quebecois does not hold the seat, now held for many years by Premier Jean Charest.

Dusseault laughs lightly as he makes a comment on Charest, who called Dusseault following the election to offer his congratulations.  “A lot of people make a parallel with Jean Charest and myself,” says Dusseault. Charest was also elected young at the age of 26, though switched from federal to political politics. When asked about the likelihood of doing this as well, Dusseault admits it’s not in the plans, considering there is no NDP party in the National Assembly. “We’ll take mandate by mandate,” laughs Dusseault.

Dusseault smiles at being labelled a backbencher. His bench mate is 22 year-old Mylene Freeman, one of five McGill University students who also found themselves elected to Parliament.  Now back in Parliament, Dusseault is about to work first-hand with his interest in university ethics. “I followed the committee before, and I already know about the issue,” says Dusseault, “Now we’re talking about access to information, privacy and ethics.”

Upon entering the Opposition, Dusseault and all the dozens of new NDP MP’s were given a veteran MP as a mentor by Jack Layton. Dusseault was paired with New Brunswick MP Yvonne Gaudin, who helped him in his first little while in Parliament. “I could call him whenever I needed him,” reflects Dusseault, acknowledging it served as a great help.

Dusseault’s favourite memory of former leader Layton was in their first meeting in Stornoway, the official residence of the Leader of the Opposition. “It was a great moment to be in Stornoway: it was an accomplishment,” remembers Dusseault. “He was the leader in 2003 and I was 13 years old at the time. All this time Jack was there; I liked the way he was doing politics,” says Dusseault.

Now on his feet, Dusseault is ready to work for his riding, while juggling girlfriend and family life at the same time. His goal is to represent the young people in his riding and across Canada. Not only working for lowering tuition, but also getting more youth involved in their own politics. With the youth vote currently at 35%, Dusseault hopes that he can help raise this and get more young people involved with politics.

For now, Dusseault is putting his degree on hold to work on representing his constituents. Though, like a full-time student, Dusseault reflects “We don’t count the hours we work. We are always talking about politics, meeting people, and working.”
