How to dress to impress
So, you’ve finally graduated from Bishop’s University and now it’s time for you to start looking for a job. I don’t mean an “ice-cream store down the street” kind of job or a “doing some extra filing for your dad” kind of job. I mean a real-life, 40 hours a week, full benefits kind of job. Scary, eh?
After weeks of searching you land an interview and as the date quickly approaches, a life-altering question enters your mind; “What am I going wear?” Don’t panic. First impressions are very important, and I’m here to give you some tips and tricks on how to look your best for this potentially intimidating situation.
First off, it’s important to dress for the particular job you’re applying to. For example, if the position involves working with children, wear bright colors; it will make you seem more approachable. If the job is more traditional, keeping your outfit conservative is best.
Secondly, pay attention to fit. If your clothes are too tight or too low cut, it will give the wrong impression, but if they are too loose and out-dated, you won’t look neat and tidy. Find something that flatters your body type and remember that classic silhouettes are always better than trendy ones.
Finally, the most important piece of advice I can give is to look like yourself and act like yourself. You know the acronym of Bishop’s – B.U. (be you). You only have a few minutes to grab the attention of your interviewer and, with the right look, you will be remembered a week later when decisions are being made.
One way to give a classic suit a touch of personality is with a great accessory. Focus on one statement piece like a vintage silk scarf tied elegantly around your neck or a pair of fabulous black stilettos. If you’re low on cash, then look for professional, stylish and affordable outfits at stores like Zara, H&M and Banana Republic. For all the boys, keep it simple; suit and tie, or for a slightly more casual look: khakis and a blue blazer. The preppy look never hurt anyone.
So remember Graduates of 2010, wear something that’s classy, fits well, and shows off your personality. By looking the part, and feeling fantastic, you will gain the confidence you need to nail that interview. Good luck!
