College Crosswalk Gets a Light
After a long saga of hits and near-misses, the College crosswalk outside the Ritz has a flashing yellow light. The Ministry of Transport finally came around after being petitioned by the SRC for over a year, since a Bishop’s student was struck by a car in November 2008.
Since then, the borough of Lennoxville and the SRC had been in regular correspondence with the Ministry, who had promised to install the flashing light on a number of occasions, but never followed through.
Earlier this year, the Ministry attempted to appease the Bishop’s community with two blinking lights, which pedestrians either didn’t notice or were disappointed by, because they were rather small and dim.
As the situation lagged on, SRC President Brad Leung began to organize a protest that was to be held yesterday – April 8 – to further pressure the Ministry to take action.
The protest, however, was kiboshed in light of the installation of a full-fledged crossing light at the crosswalk.
The light will be flashing throughout the day until 11:00 pm, using this time as a test period to determine if a push button system needs to be installed.
Leung told The Campus that he wanted to thank all those who aided in petitioning the Ministry of Transportation, and said he is “relieved to see the danger posed by the crosswalk has been significantly curtailed.”
