Composers’ Forum 2010

Posted by

New Compositions by Bishop’s Music Students

We all tasted a bit of the Drama Department, the Foreman Art Gallery and Centennial Theatre, now it’s time to support our very own Music Department.

On Tuesday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Bandeen Hall, the Music Department will present a programme of world premieres of new works by student composers. These compositions were written during this academic year under the guidance of Dr. MacDonald and feature a number of wonderful combinations—pre-recorded electro-acoustic works, acoustic pieces and electronic interactive works involving microtonality and improvisation.

Since this is “The Year of the String Quartet” in the Music Department’s composition programme, the acoustic part of the concert features the Milinov Quartet, a string quartet from Montreal hired especially to perform these new compositions! The interactive pieces are the result of an in-depth study of micro-intervals and will be performed by the composers themselves using theremins, the Trautonium ribbon, light sensors, MIDI keyboards, electronic drums, voltage-controlled oscillators, envelope generators and filters, as well as digitally-processed audio and computers.

Composers represented on the programme include: Julian Chobot, Joe Diaco, Jason Dubeau, Simon Grenier-Baird, Gwen Coleman, Gloria Elena Gamez, Pierre-Mathieu Gauthier, Dylan Hughes, Zac Kleiza, Amy Norman, Emily O’Kane, Tiffanni Walton, Chris Blades, Stephanie Burnett, Sébastien Côrriveau, Ben Whitehead-Gravel and Robert Tracey.

The Composers’ Forum is an annual event which first took place on April 5, 1988. Composers’ Forum 2010 is a celebration of our students’ successes, so please come out to support the creations of some of the most talented students in the Music Department.

The concert is free to the public and all are invited to attend. Please note the 7:30 p.m. start time.
