Green supplanted purple for a day two weeks ago, as Bishop’s students packed Reed Street for a school-sanctioned St. Patrick’s Day party.
The party, which ran from eleven o’clock one morning through the wee hours of the next, saw a huge turnout, and was a relatively calm affair.
One couch was set ablaze on Reed in the late afternoon, but the fire was extinguished reasonably quickly.
The couch, no doubt already in its autumn years, could not be saved.
In years past, St. Patrick’s Day has been far more riotous; last year, Dean of Student Affairs Bruce Stevenson cracked down on furniture-torchers and bottle-breakers in light of a rather rowdy March 17.
Stevenson told The Campus that all told, the day went smoothly.
“For the first time in many years, there were no write-ups the next day in local media,” he said. “And to my knowledge, there were no arrests either.”
Stevenson explained that the street party was an excellent idea, because the party is confined to a more manageable area.
He elaborated that this year’s party was planned in a very short time span, but that the concept was strong and would be worth repeating next year.
Stevenson admitted to being “quite disappointed” by the couch fire, and said it was caused by a few students “who haven’t figured out what this place is about.”
