How is this semester shaping up so far? For students working on ACE*Bishop’s (Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship) it is the biggest semester they have seen yet.
ACE*Bishop’s has been popping up around campus more this year than ever before, and the community and students are going to see a lot more of it in coming months.
First thing to see around campus is Z E N T in the Bishop’s University Annual Charity Fashion Show on Friday, January 29th. Zent Keymole, a student entrepreneur, was featured in The Campus before the break and has been working with ACE*Bishop’s for some time now.
Next, watch for Bixi (a new public bike system) on campus, with the bikes soon to follow. Some students will recognize the program from Montreal and ACE*Bishop’s has been working with the school to bring this rent-a-bike program to the Bishop’s University campus. Here are the nuts and bolts of Bixi at Bishop’s: four stations, two on-campus and two off-campus, and bikes that can be taken from one station to the next for a short period of time with a swipe of a Bixi key.
This green initiative is great for everyone and will be available to all students and faculty at a small cost in the form of a $15 per semester levy. A referendum will be held in February and much more information will be available. In the mean time, look out for ACE*Bishop’s in classrooms, information sessions and a demo with reps from Bixi and their bikes!
The Bixi program is not the only new environmentally sustainable project ACE*Bishop’s is working on. The ACE*Bishop’s team was one of five in Canada, chosen to pilot the SIFE RBC Blue Water Challenge (a water sustainability charitable initiative). The opportunity for the team here is two-fold, to have additional resources available to implement programs that increase awareness and reduce waste, as well as to compete heads on with some of the biggest competitors in the Ace Canada arena.
Boy, is the team ready to compete! Coming up on March 7th and 8th, the ACE Central Canada Regional Exposition in Toronto and ACE*Bishop’s will be sending 12 students to represent Bishop’s. The students will be presenting their consulting projects as well as the ACE*Bishop’s financial literacy program, STEP. The STEP team reached close to 400 students at Stanstead, BCS, Thetford Mines and New Horizons and expects to double that number before the end of this term.
This year ACE*Bishop’s has seen incredible progress and new groundbreaking projects. After coming in as Semi-Finalists last year at the Ace*Canada National Exposition, the group is eager to showcase their accomplishments at the National Expo this May in Calgary!
